Gama Aviation Plc, the global business aviation services company, has announced its intention to cease maintenance activity for its General Aviation business at Fairoaks Airport, Surrey, UK. The move comes after years of uncertainty concerning the long-term viability of the airport which is subject to an application to turn the site into a housing development.
Scott McVicar, MD, Europe Ground comments: “With little clarity on Fairoaks future as an airport, we are not able to develop a business case that will support the level of infrastructure investment required to create a modern general aviation maintenance facility. It’s unfortunate as Fairoaks Airport is ideally positioned being close to major transport hubs, however, our hangar at Fairoaks Airport is of a 1930’s vintage and neither reflects our brand nor provides a suitable environment for our people. Therefore, with great sadness, we have little option but to close the general aviation maintenance business.”
Although the general aviation maintenance business will close, the design team will continue to be based at Fairoaks Airport, working in tandem with Gama Aviation’s 135,000 sq ft refurbished Bournemouth facility.
McVicar continues: “We’ll continue to finish the general aviation inputs we have booked into the hangar at Fairoaks Airport however once this backlog is complete we’ll be closing the doors on the general aviation maintenance hangar for the last time.”
